Early medieval jewelry

In Leiden I saw some amazig jewelry from the early Middle Ages in the museum. There was an exhibition about the Netherlands in the Merovingian times (400-700 AD). As you can see, gold and different kinds of stones were used to create colourful necklaces and other jewelry. These stones were sometimes from the Netherlands, but also from places as far away as India. All these pieces can bee seen in The Rijksmuseum voor Oudheden in Leiden. Januari 1917. The war has been going on for years and most soldiers have little hope of seeing the end, they gave up hope. Some of them tried to desert, others tried to wound themselves so they would go home. Military command thinks these people should be punished severely, since their example could mean others would do the same. Five soldiers are sentenced to death for self-mutilation. Five men are brought to one of the front trenches. They will not be shot by a firing squad, but they will be send out into No-man’s land so the Germans will finish them. This is not told to their families, because this goes against all the rules and regulations. The families will get the message their loved ones were killed in battle. Mathilde, the fiancée of the youngest soldier who was called Manech, gets a letter from a dying sergeant when the war is over. He was there on that awful day in 1917 and he was the one who wrote Manech’s last letter to Mathilde. He tells Mathilde what happened

Inspirational art: Pupils from the knitting-school

This painting is painted in 1895 by Dutch painter Wally Moes. She lived from 1856-1918 and was a member of the painting school in the artist's village of Laren. She is known for painting romantic and often sentimental paintings, and most of her paintings did not stand the test of time, I think. But this one I absolutely loved. You see here three little girls who were pupils of the knitting school, and you see them with their knitting, while they walk. I saw this painting at the exhibition about Jan Veth I wrote about a couple of weeks ago, because Wally Moes was a friend of Jan Veth.

Corleone, Il capo dei capi (2007)

Another great Italian mafia series, although this one is a bit more recent. In six episodes of 90 minutes each the story is told of the Corleone clan and their rise to the top of the Sicilian mafia . It focuses expecially on Totò Riina and how he managed to become Capo dei Capi , boss of the bosses. The story begins in 1943. Totò Riina and this friends are very poor and they live in Corleone. The boss of the village is doctor Michele Navarra, who belongs to the mafia. It is his godson Luciano Liggio who sees how the boys can be useful and he often hires them to do certain jobs for him. Finally Liggio murders Navarra and from that moment Liggion runs the show. They want to expand to Palermo and they need to find a way into the organization. The mafia families of Palermo do not take the peasants from Corleone serious in the beginning. Liggio becomes older and is more preoccupied with the good life and from that moment it is Totò Riina who calls the shots. He stops at nothing t

Shadows in the sun (2007)

If you cannot go to Italy, you must try to bring Italy to your own home. Watching a film set in Italy is a very good way to do this. Jeremy works at a publisher in London. He is sent to Tuscany to convince the writer Weldon Parish to write another book, even though Weldon has not written a book since his wife died. Weldon lets Jeremy know he is not welcome and Jeremy is almost on his way home when he falls in love with Weldon’s daughter. Jeremy decides to stay a little longer. Slowly a friendship between Weldon and Jeremy grows and in the end there are happy endings for everyone. Some movies are completely predictable, but sometimes this does not matter. From the first minute you know Jeremy will lose his slick ways in the Tuscan village, he will get the girl and of course the writer will start writing again.
