Nobody's boy, Hector Malot

My childhood version. The Dutch title translates as: Alone in the world When I was little, my parents had a big blue book on their bookshelves with beautiful drawings. I loved the story of the young orphan Remi who was sold by his mean stepfather when he was ten years old to a musician, Vitalis, who travelled around with Joli-Coeur the little monkey and the dogs Capi, Dolce and Zerbino. Nodoby’s boy is a beautiful story and I read it many times. Only later did I find out this was a world famous French classic, translated into many languages. The story is probably known: Remi is an orphan and that is why he does not belong to anybody. But fortunately for him he does encounter many people who help him, sometimes for a short while, but often for a longer period of time. Early medieval jewelry

In Leiden I saw some amazig jewelry from the early Middle Ages in the museum. There was an exhibition about the Netherlands in the Merovingian times (400-700 AD). As you can see, gold and different kinds of stones were used to create colourful necklaces and other jewelry. These stones were sometimes from the Netherlands, but also from places as far away as India. All these pieces can bee seen in The Rijksmuseum voor Oudheden in Leiden. Michael & Natasha, Rosemary and Donald Crawford

Michael Alexandrovich of Russia was born in 1878 as the younger brother of tsar Nicolas II. As long as Nicolas did not have a male heir, Michael was the first in line for the throne. In 1904 Alexei was born, but soon it became clear the boy had the deadly disease hemophilia and would probably not get older than twenty. Michael was still important as a potential emperor for Russia. Members of the Imperial family had to obey certain rules. You had to ask the tsar for permission to get married and marrying a divorced woman was absolutely not done. People who did not follow the rules were banned from court and sometimes even from Russia. Since Michael played such an important part in the future of Russia, it was crucial he did follow the rules. The statue at the beginning of the exhibition This year Marilyn Monroe would have celebrated her 90th birthday. Because of this there is an exhibition in Amsterdam dedicated to this amazing and iconic woman. I am a huge fan of Marilyn Monroe and I can tell you this exhibition did not disappoint me. They tried to give an impression of her outer-persona as the moviestar and the woman she was in private. Marilyn had so many different sides to her and she cannot be defined by just one or two things, she was so much more. In this exhibition you can see clothing (also the dress of the movie The seven year itch), personal things like her lipstick or books, or furniture from her last house, personal papers and her diary, but also props from her films, costumes and things like scripts she worked with. If you are in Amsterdam, go to De nieuwe kerk and see this exhibition, it is a must-see for every Marilyn-fan. It is open until February 5th 2017. When she was still Norma Jeane ...
