The Guernsey Literary and Potatoe Peel Pie Society (2018)

The first book I ever reviewed on this blog, back in 2012 was The Guernesey literary potatoe peel pie society.

I love this heartwarming story about a literary book club at Guernesey and how London writter Juliet comes into contact with them and finds out what happened on Guernsey during the occupation. I especially liked the form of the novel, with the letters telling us the story. It was well done and a beautiful read.

Finally, a movie has been made of this book. Last weekend I watched it and I must admit I liked it very much.

Lily James plays the lead character Juliet Ashton, the writer who lost her parents during the war, and is now at a loss what she should do. She is sort of romantically involved with an American chap, but when she receives a letter from Dawsey, a member of the Guernsey literary Society, she feels here may be the story she needs.

She goes to Guernsey and meets the members of the Society and finds out what happened to one of them during the war.

The clothes are great (love those fourties fashion) and half the cast of Downton Abbey plays in this film. Jessica Brown-Findlay is Elizabeth, Penenlope Wilton is Amelia and Matthew Goode is Juliets close friend and editor Sidney.

I loved to see Dutch actor Michiel Huisman als Dawsey, the Guernsey pigfarmer and love interest for Juliet. He is very handsome, but not in an obvious way and I thought he was perfect for the role.

In short, I loved the movie, although I think the book is still better.

My review of the book can be found HERE, from 2012.

  1. I'm with you. I loved the movie....the but book is so much better. :D It's one of my all-time favorites. (But that's probably because I really like epistolary novels.)
