A Vestal virgin

This is one of the statues of the Vestal Virgins in Rome. The Vestal Virgins were a college of priestesses of Vesta, the Goddess of the home and hearth. The virgins tended the fire of Vesta, and with that they safeguarded the Roman Empire.

They were highly respected and when a criminal who was sentenced to death met a Vestal Virgin on the way to his excecution, he was pardoned.
Testaments were also kept at the Temple and you could come here for water and fire.

The round temple of Vesta can still be found in the middle of the Forum Romanum in Rome, and the house of the Vestal Virgins is right next to it.
