Caravaggio exhibition

This past year has really been a Caravaggio-year for me. I saw his paintings when I was in Napels in May and when I was in Rome this Summer, I managed to see 15 of his works. (I will write an article about those in the new year, I promise).

So when I heard there was an exhibition in the Dutch city of Utrecht with works of Caravaggio, I knew I had to go and see for myself.

It is an exhibition that shows how much influence Caravaggio had on his fellow-artists. He left Rome in 1606 and died in 1610, but the hundreds of artists who came to Rome in those days wanted to be inspired, learn from eachother and especially wanted to paint in the exciting new way of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.

The exhibition is very beautiful, but the eye-catcher is the work on loan from the Vatican museums: Entombment. It is breathtaking. All other works pale in comparison with the genius of Caravaggio. In my mind, he was the best artist of his time and perhaps even of all times.

It was the perfect end of a year filled with Caravaggio!

  1. Sounds like 2018 was the year of Caravagio for you. How cool that you got to see so many works by this artist! Which artist will it be next year? ;D

    1. It was amazing to see so many of his works in real life. I am not sure about next year, it will come when it comes :-) After all, I only went on a Caravaggio-quest when I was in Napels!

      Kind regards,
