Moving paintings by Caravaggio

At this moment there is a beautiful exhibition in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It is called Caravaggio-Bernini. Baroque in Rome.

It highlights the masterful art of Caravaggio and Bernini, the best painter and sculptor the 16th and 17th century had. I do not think there is anybody better with light and drama than Caravaggio and for Bernini marble seems to be something that was alive.

I love how in a room full of paintings, the one by Caravaggio immediately catches your attention.

The baroque was the art-movement of the Contra-Reformation. The Catholic church wanted to convey the stories of the Bible and the lives of the Saints with emotions, so the people would feel connected to them.

And that is exactly what these two paintings do, they draw you in and make you emotional, in a good way!
I was very moved by these two paintings, and it is amazing to realize that these paintings are just as powerful today as they were 400 years ago when they were painted.

Caravaggio really is one of my favorite artists of all times and I feel very privileged that I was able to see so many of his artwork here in The Netherlands.
